Introduction

Welcome to two courses in one

Welcome. Get settled. Get connected. Review the syllabus. Think about how technology and society impact your life, your community, and your future. What can you access in your community, where you are, which will allow you to explore some aspects of science, technology, politics, and policy?

Course Overview

This is two courses in one: Engineers can take POE372 for half credit (two lectures per week) and anyone can take POE374 for a full credit (two lectures plus a seminar per week). There are four modules to the course. You will learn models of policy making and processes for evidence-based policy applied to science and technology. You will apply this understanding of policy and society to problems of environment and economic growth, the impact of technology on employment, and Canada’s defence procurement challenges related to the National Shipbuilding Strategy and next generation fighter aircraft.

How to succeed

The evaluation is different for the two courses.

  • 372 is evaluated with quizzes, participation, and a final exam (40-20-40).
  • 374 is evaluated with  quizzes, participation, and two written assignments (20-10-20-50) but no exam.

Stay ahead of the work by participating each week and (for 374) planning your assignments in advance. Consider the option of experiential learning - reflecting on doing.
